Experience the Moselle and savor the Moselle

Where better to do that than in Bernkastel-Kues.

Experience the Moselle

Exciting hikes, brisk bike tours, a nice boat trip on the Moselle, the exuberant atmosphere at the wine festival in the Middle Moselle or the flair of the romantic Christmas market in the old town. Bernkastel-Kues has its charms in every season.

Hiking on the Moselle

Bernkastel-Kues is predestined for a nice hiking holiday. There are wonderful vantage points, steep vineyards and varied tours through the vineyards or the old town. Anyone looking for a sporting challenge and who likes to climb has come to the right place.

Pure cycling pleasure!

The Moselle also offers the best conditions for a successful cycling holiday. Whether along the Moselle, past steep vineyards and romantic wine villages, the Maare-Mosel cycle path, one of the most famous and beautiful railway cycle paths in Germany or by mountain bike through forests and single trails. You are right here.

Savor the Moselle

Taste award-winning wines from famous locations in one of the cozy wine taverns, in a rustic wine cellar during a wine tasting at the winemaker's during a guided tour through the steep slopes of the Middle Moselle or during a visit to the Moselle vinotheque.

Die Mosel-Vinothek

The Mosel vinotheque

A special recommendation is a visit to the Moselle vinotheque in the historic vaulted cellars of the St. Nicholas Hospital. Here, with the vinotheque, a very special facility for Moselle wine culture has been created. With a probably unique tasting, you can experience, compare and enjoy the liquid treasures of the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer in their diversity. Everyone can devote themselves to their own personal wine study and deepen their knowledge of the wine-growing region.

The Mosel Vinothek in Bernkastel-Kues is the world's largest vinotheque for Mosel Riesling. There you can taste and buy 150 different wines from the Moselle region. The wines on offer are sensory tested and selected by a jury of experts.

Hello dear Moselle riders and wine lovers

Here I would like to show you a few sights of our beautiful town. I hope you enjoy looking at the pictures.

By the way: A good drop also tastes good here.

  • The waterfront WITH ST. MICHELS CHURCH

At the foot of the Bernkastel district you will find the Catholic parish church of St. Michael. As a symbol of the city, its silhouette now serves as the skyline of the romantic wine village.

  • The historic market square with Michael's fountain

The medieval market square is one of the main attractions for every Moselle vacationer. The centuries-old half-timbered houses, the Renaissance town hall (1608), the graceful St. Michael's Fountain (1606) and the picturesque Spitzhäuschen (1416) are a reflection of the living poetry of the Middle Ages.

  • The Spitzhäuschen

The half-timbered house, built in 1416, is an excellent masterpiece of rural and bourgeois building and living culture of the Middle Ages and at the same time a primal example of old, Moselle winegrowers' houses.

  • The bear fountain

The bear fountain on Graacherstrasse was demolished in 1899. A new Bärenpütz has stood here since 1968. An imposing work with two life-size bears - the heraldic animals of the city of Bernkastel - on a mighty fountain made of gray basalt.

  • The Cusanus Birthplace

The house where Nikolaus von Kues was born is now a museum and is located on the banks of the Moselle in Kues. Nikolaus von Kues was one of the great polymaths of the Renaissance: legal scholar, philosopher, theologian, astronomer and taught in many subjects. He was significantly shaped by his profession as a priest and cardinal. He was constantly looking for ways to God, but he realized that we cannot grasp God with our thinking.

  • St. Nikolaus-Hospital (Cusanus Foundation)

A foundation in the service of the people.

The St. Nikolaus Hospital in Bernkastel-Kues is the late Gothic foundation of the Cardinal and Bishop of Brixen Nikolaus von Kues. The founder founded the facility on December 3, 1458 as a hospital for the poor for exactly 33 single men from the nobility, clergy and bourgeoisie.

  • Landshut Castle

Antique fort and castle complex - when you are up here, you can enjoy more than just a magnificent view of the Moselle town! If you travel to Bernkastel-Kues by land or across the river on holiday, your gaze immediately falls on the Landshut castle ruins, which tower high above the old town.
