Das Cusanus Geburtshaus
The birthplace of Cusanus in the Kues district.
Nikolaus von Kues was born in Kues in 1401 as the son of the merchant and Moselle shipper Johann Cryfftz (Cancer) and his wife Katharina Roemer. Although his path as a student, archiepiscopal secretary, papal legate, prince-bishop and cardinal, among others. led via Heidelberg, Padua, Cologne, Trier, Basel, Constantinople, Brixen and Rome, he remained connected to his place of birth and in 1458 founded the St. Nikolaus Hospital there, which still exists today. Together with the house where he was born, the hospital, to which Cusanus left his library for safekeeping in his will, represents a cultural heritage of high standing.

St. Nikolaus Hospital / Cusanus Foundation
The scholar, cardinal and prince-bishop Nikolaus von Kues, also called Cusanus, founded a "poor hospital" in his place of birth for 33 old men from all classes: 6 noblemen, 6 clergy and 21 commoners and elected St. Nicholas as the patron of the house.
In agreement with his siblings, he endowed the foundation with the rich parental legacy, primarily real estate. The properties also include a winery. The late Gothic monastery complex, based on the monastery model, has never been destroyed over the centuries. In an uninterrupted tradition to this day, it offers old people (now women) accommodation and care.
The Mosel Wine Museum and the Mosel Vinothek are also located within the walls of the Cusanus Foundation.
