The path leads you over the Fiers chapel and through Kues vineyards to the birth house of Nikolaus von Kues - also called <Cusanus>. Nikolaus von Kues was born in Kues in 1401 as the son of the businessman Johann Cryfftz (cancer). He was one of the first German humanists in the epoch of transition between the late Middle Ages and early modern times. The cancer in the coat of arms of Bernkastel-Kues is reminiscent of the universally educated German philosopher, theologian, cardinal and mathematician.

Cusanus - Nikolaus von Kues

Nikolaus von Kues [kuːs], Latinized Nicolaus Cusanus or Nicolaus de Cusa (* 1401 in Kues on the Moselle, today Bernkastel-Kues; † August 11, 1464 in Todi, Umbria), was a universally educated German philosopher who was famous during his lifetime , Theologian, cardinal and mathematician. He was one of the first German humanists in the epoch of transition between the late Middle Ages and the early modern period.

Nicholas played an important role in church politics, especially in the disputes over church reform. At the Council of Basel, he initially sided with the majority of those who took part in the Council, who called for the Pope's powers to be restricted. But later he moved to the papal camp, which ultimately gained the upper hand. He actively supported the papal interests, showed diplomatic skills and made a brilliant career as a cardinal (from 1448), papal legate, prince-bishop of Brixen and vicar general in the Papal States. In Brixen, however, he encountered massive resistance from the nobility and the sovereign, against which he was unable to assert himself.

As a philosopher, Nikolaus stood in the tradition of Neo-Platonism, whose ideas he took from both ancient and medieval literature. His thinking revolved around the concept of the collapse of opposites into a unity in which the contradictions between the seemingly incompatible dissolve. Metaphysically and theologically he saw in God the place of this unity. In state theory and politics, too, he professed a unified ideal. The goal of achieving the greatest possible harmony was of the highest value to him, in contrast to which he considered factual differences of opinion to be of secondary importance. In line with this way of thinking, he developed an idea of religious tolerance that was unusual for his time. He accorded Islam, with which he dealt intensively, a certain truth content and a right to exist.
